Bed Side Manners
Monday, April 28, 2008 at 08:15AM For those of you who share a bed with someone, I have a very serious question.
Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
We recently changed our master bedroom around and moved the bed from one side of the room to the other. The head of the bed used to be on the wall opposite the door. Therefore, when sleeping, I was on the left hand side of the bed. Now that we’ve moved the head of the bed to the same wall as the door, I sleep on the right hand side of the bed. So, left and right don’t really matter to me, it’s more about orientation of the bed in the room.
I also have to have one foot outside of the covers. My husband’s theory is that I can’t sleep unless I have one foot out of the door…it’s a family trait…there are more divorces in my family than happy marriages...my sister is on her 3rd marriage. Ha, ha…he’s a funny guy, that husband of mine. Guess that’s why I keep him around…for now.
Honestly, I have many reasons:
1) When I was a kid I used to have nightmares about being in a house fire. I want to be close to the door. I actually had a pillowcase under my bed with some clothes and prized possessions in case I ever needed a quick getaway. I was probably 5 years old.
2) I get up at least once a night to go to the bathroom. I am blind as a bat without my contacts and would probably break a leg if I had to stumble through the entire room to get there.
3) I am a mom to 2 kids and 2 dogs. I’m on call 24/7 and have to answer to their cries in the night.
Of course, part of the mom thing has me playing musical beds some nights. Last night, I started off by falling asleep with Princess, then going to my bed. Got up to check in on BamBam, who has taken to yelling in his sleep lately. He later joined us in our bed. On nights like that, I take what piece of a bed I can get just to get a little shut eye.
So, my friends, please do tell. Are you particular about right/left, are you a room orientation freak like me, or could you care less?

No matter the orientation of the bed in the room, I'm on the right side of the bed because I'm a right-side sleeper. Go figure.
I am on the right, but rather I am on the side my wife doesn't want, it changes in hotels and relatives houses.
I must sleep on the left hand side...whether at home or a hotel..maybe because I am left handed...odd you should mention one foot outside of the covers....I sleep with my right foot outside.
Alby prefers to sleep closest to the door.
That makes me amBEDextrous, changing sides for whatever works best for him.
The sleeping situation above seems to work well, except when Princess and Bam Bam sleep over, or we sleep over with them. Then it's anything goes..., as you well know.

I have to sleep closest to the door. It's the male protector instinct, I think. If an attacker comes, I get first shot at him. It's really inconvenient to have to get out of bed run around it and then clock him. Your foot out the door theory is funny :)
I am like you, I need to be close to the door in case of night time tears. (Hell, who am I kidding, there are ALWAYS night time tears at 3am).
Funny you should mention this, because it's been an issue at my house lately. We've just moved to a new house, and now our bed is oriented such that my side of the bed (the right) is closer to the door. In 12 years together, this has never happened. Now we have a dilemma - I don't want to sleep closest to the door, but neither of us is keen on switching sides of the bed. We're contemplating a trial run of switching, but I have a feeling neither of us will sleep well.
Oh, and I often sleep with my feet outside the covers. I hate having hot feet. (Or maybe I'm on the run?)
