From Raggs to Riches OR Free Stuff
Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 09:41AM Every now and then, I read about a blogger being sent free stuff with the hopes that they will promote said stuff on their blog. I’ve often wondered…how do I get in on this sweet deal? I *heart* free stuff.
Way, way back, in the time of my life otherwise known as BC (Before Children), I had very cool jobs. I was an event planner for a few different companies. I got to eat for free at the best restaurants in Boston. Got to travel all over and stay in really nice suites of the best hotels. Got free stuff given to me all the time. I was in my 20's and didn't really appreciate how good I had it.
When my life entered the AD (after delivery, all done?, always dead-tired), the only free stuff I receive is in the form of poop, boogies, the occasional diaper sample in the mail. Blech.
That is, until now…
This was in my MommyCosm inbox:
Dear THE Mommy (sounds weird in my head but the only name I know you by!),
My name {xx}and I work for Raggs, a children's entertainment company based in Charlotte , NC . We have a musical preschool series on public television (of the same name) about five dogs who play in a rock 'n' roll band and live together in their own cool clubhouse.
"Raggs" uses music and humor to introduce children to elements that span the preschool curriculum. It's a wonderful show that's both fun and educational. That being said, we're still relatively new and it's part of my job (a very fun part!) to introduce the series and music to parents and kids all over the country. I would love to send some Raggs goodies (CD, DVD, activity book) for you to share with Princess and BamBam... I think they’re both still of “Raggs appreciation” age! Could you please provide me with a mailing address? In the meantime, you can check us out online at Raggs.com .
I enjoy your posts on MommyCosm… especially the Friday haikus! I sometimes write haikus on my personal Twitter page. Do you use Twitter ? I didn’t see a link for it on your blog, but if you do, you can follow Raggs to get the latest on our TV series, touring efforts, what have you J Thanks so much for your time!
SO, I gave her my husband’s work address. I’m still in the closet about my name and posting pictures here at MommyCosm. I wasn’t about to give out the home address. Safety, security, blah, blah. Although, stay tuned this week b/c I’m contemplating changing that policy so that I can show you what I did this weekend…it was so very cool, but the only way to share would be to put up pictures. It’s so cool, I even saw pictures of myself on someone else’s blog covering the event.
I digress…
Has anyone seen this Raggs show on PBS? I checked and we don’t have it in our area yet. It looks like the type of show that the kids will like, not sure if it's one I would sit down and watch with them. I’ll let you all know more once I receive the goody package from them.
Fellow bloggers…have you ever gotten free stuff? I’d love to hear about it…this is a whole new world opening up to me.
No free stuff? Tell me what you miss from your BC days...besides the obvious of your perky breasts and your waistline.

I totally miss my perky breasts! This man boob thing sure is a downer :)
In the past few months, I have somehow gotten on many a PR firm's media hit list. It blows me away that they think I am somehow influential! hahaha! So far, I haven't gotten any big freebies besides DVDs, and stuff to give away (which is totally cool because my readers benefit). But one day, oh one day, I'm hoping Jack Daniels or Newcastle's PR people catch wind that I would pimp the hell out of them given the chance (and a free trip to their distillery/brewery).
I used to do the free stuff thing, but dude...it isn't as cool as it sounds. As soon as I would get the stuff I would get all stressed about needing to write a review and then I had people asking me to promote things where I wouldn't even get free stuff (sorry, not cool!) and ugh. It just got too stressful. I started ignoring the emails from my PR guy and haven't heard from him in awhile. It was really fun at first though, so enjoy. But, I'll bet ya get sick of it. ;)
