On family and funerals and pumpkin parties

This last week was a complete whirlwind for me.  Family came in from California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and South Carolina.  We had three full days for the wake, funeral and burial...and eating, talking, drinking, hanging out.  We tried to keep the kids on somewhat of a regular schedule.  Unfortunately, their bed time was extended a bit.  They were a little tired...OK they were exhausted, but we got spend priceless time with family.

And then yesterday was our 4th Annual Pumpkin Party.  Every year we have 50+ friends and family over to carve pumpkins, drink pumpkintinis and just hang out.

So, I think this is the longest span in 3 years that I've gone without posting on Mommycosm.  There were so many things that I tried to file away in my brain to share with you later.

Forgive the quick list, but I'm spent.  Here's a few:

  • I watched my Mom go up to my Step Mother at the wake and introduce herself.  AND we all went to breakfast together the next morning.  AND there wasn't a weird moment of awkward silence even once.  Aww...my parents are all grown up.
  • I was stuck in the church pew and unable to make an escape when Amazing Grace started playing at the funeral.  I haven't been able to listen to it without having a full-blown panic attack since my Uncle Vic's funeral 5 years ago.  For real.  OK, I did cry like a baby.  But no panic attack.  That's a huge step for me.
  • No, Reverend, there are NOT 3 syllables in the word GOD.  Especially not in New Hampshire.  And, yes, I will haunt my husband and sister if they allow you anywhere near my services.  Just saying.
  • I dare anyone with a beating heart to listen to Taps at a military burial without sobbing.  Nay, up that to a double dog dare.
  • Apparently my house IS indeed big enough to host a party for 50+ people INDOORS the entire time.  We usually have our 10x36 covered porch and the back yard for parties.  It was pouring rain yesterday and I was very stressed pre-party.  It's all good.
  • For the record, I make the world's best pumpkintinis.  And if my archives prove I haven't already shared the recipe, I promise to post it this week.
  • I missed the last 3 days at the gym.  It did feel really, really good not to stress about my funeral clothes being too tight.  I'm psyched to see progress.  But, this was the first time in a month I have missed 2 consecutive days.  Headed there now.  Countdown: Aruba = 9.5 weeks.

Happy Sunday!

Enjoy the last one before the darn clocks fall back.

I love the idea of a pumpkin carving party. I'm filing that one away for next year!
