Sid the Science Kid honors Earth Day
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 12:01AM We were recently offered the opportunity to screen an advance copy of Sid the Science Kid’s Earth Day-themed episode, set to air tomorrow.
Not familiar with the show? It airs on PBS Kids and is co-produced by The Jim Henson Company. Here’s their description:
Sid the Science Kid is an animated television series designed to support science learning for children ages 3 - 6...the program appeals to kids’ instinctive quest to figure things out, using a relatable multi-cultural cast, human and music as key teaching tools.
My kids are huge fans of Sid the Science Kid and were very eager to screen the episode. They really love Mommy's blog when I get to include them.
I find Sid to be very informative. My kids are at THAT age. You know, when they ask about everything from why the sky is blue, why volcanos erupt, and why we have to earn money before we can spend it. Love their inquisitiveness, but they’re also starting to get the feeling that Mommy might not know everything. *gasp* Sid might buy me a little extra time before they figure it out!
The Earth Day episode is called “The Dirt on Dirt.” In it, Sid and his friends become dirt detectives and explore what makes dirt dirty - and discover how important it is to the Earth.
There is also an interactive website to accompany the episode.
We all really enjoyed "The Dirt on Dirt".
Our favorite parts?
Sarah: the song of the worm - where a worm can eat, where a worm can poop
Max: when Sid found a worm
me-Ashlie: When Gabriella found a bug and left it in the soil. The teacher praised her for leaving it outside in its home. SCORE! Hoping this will encourage Max to leave creatures OUTside...I’m not a fan of creepy crawlies in my house *shudder*.
Jake: watching the kids giggle about worms pooping
In all honesty, Jake joked that the episode was “Treehugger political brainwashing.” His words, not mine...LOL. Hello, I AM a treehugger and view his statement as a compliment.
I think this is a great forum to make kids more AWARE of our impact on the environment. It is perfectly appropriate for Earth Day. I recommend that you check it out - find your local air time.

We should all be so lucky as to raise a few more tree huggers.
Thanks for the heads-up, hon!
