WordWorld: Castles in the Sea
Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 12:40PM One of the biggest challenges with our recent down-size from a mini-van to a coupe has been keeping the kids entertained while en route. I was pretty spoiled for a while there. I could just pop in a DVD and they would allow me to drive in peace. Their seats were far enough apart that they couldn’t reach each other, even if they wanted to touch. Of course, I was paying twice as much in gas - I don’t regret the decision one bit.
But, Roxanne is much, much smaller. With no DVD, they are b-o-r-e-d. They touch. Constantly. It took a week or so of “STOP TOUCHING YOUR BROTHER/SISTER!” moments before I realized that I needed to do something to ensure my sanity while driving. So, I fell back on games I used to play as a kid. Word games.
Max is in preschool and can usually figure out the first letter of words. Sarah just finished first grade and is a little Spelling Bee. So, I have one of them pick a word. He gives the first letter and she will spell the rest. It usually buys me about 30 minutes without fighting or touching. A blissful 30 minutes.
We recently received a copy of WordWorld: Castles In The Sea to review. I had a feeling that the kids would like it. They have seen WordWorld before on PBS...and now they play word games all.the.time.
I’ll admit, PBS becomes my babysitter when I need to get an hour or so of work done. I had never watched episodes with them. When I first saw the way each of the objects is made up of its word, I worried it might be a bit obnoxious. For example, the shark’s body is shaped from the letters s-h-a-r-k. That could get old.
I totally love this DVD. It is far from obnoxious - the story lines are pretty entertaining. The DVD is 60 minutes long and contains four episodes of WordWorld. Both of the kids are totally digging it. Not only that, but it also contains a bonus DVD with over 2 HOURS of full stories from: Sid the Science Kid, WordWorld, Dive Oily Dive!, Hurray for Huckle!, Tiny Planets, Will & Dewitt, Animal Atlas, Hermie and Friends, and Pocoyo and Hopla. It’s like a best-of-the-best DVD of PBS.
Score!!
The MSRP is $14.99, but I noticed it on Amazon for less (so I gave you the link). Definitely worth the price. They have other WordWorld DVDs listed, too. Totally want to get a couple more.
I highly recommend this DVD for anyone with kids learning letters and/or how to spell.

Thanks for the recommendation, hon! I'll have to look into this!
We LOVE PBS kids in our house as well. My daughter adores Word World, as well as their online activities. I'll have to check this out. I'm sure she would love it!
