How to turn your .blogspot.com blog into a .com
Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 02:32PM I recently wrote a post about how to take your blog from hobby to business. In it, I recommended that any bloggers looking to form relationships with brands need to stop using subdomains (like .blogspot.com) and upgrade to their own custom domain (.com). What I didn't tell you was the how.
What to know?
The first thing you need to do is purchase your custom domain. That is the easy part. Go Daddy seems to be the leader in the market. I have used their services multiple times. They are quick, easy and inexpensive. Here is my (affiliate) link:
Once you own a custom domain, you will need to set up a redirect for your .blogspot address. This means that whenever someone types in or clicks a link that brings them to your .blogspot address, it is quickly and automatically redirected to your .com. Seriously, it happens soooo quickly, unless you are aware of the redirect in place, you probably will not notice.
Did you know that Blogger allows custom domain redirect for FREE? Yep. If you purchase your own .com, you can set it up to use on your .blogspot blog. And it's FREE.
So why wouldn't you?!?!
I think a lot of people just don't know this service is available... or they are intimidated. The process includes terms like "CNAME" and "A Name" and involves changes to both your Go Daddy and Blogger accounts. It can seem overwhelming to the non-tech saavy.
Here's a manual from Blogger Help in case you want to give it a whirl on your own.
If you want to switch over, but don't feel comfortable handling it yourself, considering hiring someone in-the-know to make the switch for you.
Someone like... ME!
I recently made the switch for my friend Melanie, The Coupon Goddess. If you want an example of the redirect, type in: www.thecoupongoddess.blogspot.com to see how quickly the redirect happens.
Don't blink or you might miss it.
Within an hour, I upgraded her blog url to a more professional look. Her feeds stayed the same. Nothing changed on her blog itself. It was a seamless and painless process.
I've decided to offer the service to other .blogspot bloggers.
My fee? $50 for a custom domain upgrade.
You will first need to purchase the custom domain. Then, contact me. I will need your domain host and Blogger username and passwords. I accept payment via PayPal... and Starbucks... and am open to the idea of bartering as well.
If you are on a .blogspot blog and would like to speak with me further about upgrading to a custom domain, send me an email at: themommy [at] mommycosm [dot] com or leave your email address within a comment on this post. I promise to get back to you within 24 hours.

when I changed my .blogspot to a .com custom domain a while back....it's like it changed my blog to a website. When reader add my blog to their blog list, I show up at the bottom..no image...and it does not update when I publish new posts. Any of this sound familiar? Cannot find any help via Blogger or GoDaddy for this
When I change from blogger to .com will I need to buy a hosting service in addition to a domain name? Also, will I have to design and write the code for the new site (or hire someone) ? On the example you gave in the article, I got a screen from blogger first saying is it ok if we redirect you. I feel that might deter some of my readers.
