Never underestimate a girl with balls

My inner circle of family and friends has known that I have been tossing this idea around for a long, long time - perhaps 2 years now.  Through the past decade of coaching high school girls, I have observed a huge decline in self esteem amongst my players and an increase in overall discontent within this generation of high school students as a whole.  I've blamed many things, including technology and the media.  Did you know that the average teen sends and receives 100 texts a day?!  Blame doesn't offer solutions and I don't think technology and media usage are going to decline anytime soon, so what to do?

The way I coach has had to evolve over the years.  My practice plans now include a huge amount of team and confidence building activities.  Everything we do has a greater meaning.  It pays off, not only by way of winning games - the last 4 teams I have been involved with have gone to their championship game - but also in the way the players carry themselves and interact with each other.  I have seen first-hand that sports can be an amazing vehicle towards self esteem and away from self destructive behaviors.

Here are a few disconcerting statistics for you, from a recent CDC study as reported in a NYDailyNews.com article

  • 1 in 6 high school students has seriously considered suicide.
  • 1 in 12 high school students has attempted it.
  • 20% of high-schoolers said they'd been bullied while at school.
  • 16% said they'd been 'cyberbullied' through email, chat, instant messaging, social media or texting.

The call to do more has been shouting loud and clear.  I have the skills, the heart and the willingness to make a difference.

But how?

There are a gazillion "anti-bullying" programs out there.  So many that kids are becoming numb to their message and they tend to roll their eyes when they know yet another speaker is coming around to share their message.  So, I decided if I choose to do something, it needs to be cool.  It needs to be a bit edgy and interesting.  It needs to grab their attention.

Never underestimate a girl with balls.

Not sure when this concept came to me, but since day one, it has been in my heart and on the tip of my tongue.  Every person with whom I have shared my idea has shaken their head with a smirk, sly smile or full on laugh.

Edgy?

Yep.

Controversial?

Perhaps.

But the intent is pure.

The mission of a girl with balls™ is to empower girls through sports by sharing inspirational female athlete stories/quotes, running empowerment workshops for sports teams and to generate funds through apparel sales for donation to worthy causes benefitting female athletes.

Fresh, natural turkeys from The Meat House [$50 giveaway]

We may be far north of the Mason-Dixon line up here in New Hampshire, but I swear sometimes I was meant to be a southern girl.  I prefer the heat over the snow, don't mind my husband driving around in a big 'ol truck and even catch myself saying y'all every now and again.

Must have been from Charleston in another life.

One other southern thang I enjoy?  Deep frying our Thanksgiving turkey.

Oh, yeah.  YUM.

It's become tradition to fry our turkey ever since we started hosting Thanksgiving Dinner a few years back.  We even serve it up on paper plates.  We're Klassy.

Not your traditional New England holiday dinner, right?  They might take away my Yankee card after admitting this so publicly;-)

My husband takes the turkey (or turkeys depending on how many people we're hosting) outside with the fryer while I prepare the sides inside.  He gets to play with fire and I get him out of the kitchen.  It's a recipe for a long, long marriage.  Posting goofy pictures of him kissing a turkey may not be... we shall see.  Ha.

I think he enjoys this tradition as much as I do.

Check out this recipe over at The Meat House Blog for fried turkey.  Frying is super fast (3 minutes per pound, plus 5 per bird) and frees up my oven for other things like the sweet potato casserole and snowflake buns.

OK, I'm getting hungry for turkey and Thanksgiving is still over a week away.  Planning to order my turkey on Friday from The Meat House.  I mentioned in the past that we prefer to buy all of our meats there.  So, I was super excited when I saw that they are taking orders for their fresh, natural turkeys.  Count me in.

Want to win a $50 gift card to The Meat House to buy yourself a fresh, natural turkey this year?  Here's how.

Giveaway:

One lucky Mommycosm reader will win $50 gift card from The Meat House.

Mandatory Entry: Simply leave a comment on this post with your first name and state initials.  Tell me: have you ever fried your turkey?

One comment per person, please.  You must supply an email address in order for me to contact the winner.  (Note: I do NOT recommend putting email within the content of the comment itself. SPAM is not a quality meat.)

Submitting a comment constitutes agreeing to the terms of the Official Rules.

Extra Entry: Follow @TheMeatHouse and re-tweet their #Meatsgiving tweet, come back here and leave the link to your tweet in a separate comment.  Oh, and it's not just for an extra entry, it's for a great cause.  For every re-tweet, they will donate $.50 to Share our Strength, a campaign to end chlidhood hunger in America.

Deadline:

All comments must be received by Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 7pm (et).  Mommycosm will use Random.org to choose the winner.  Any comments received after the deadline will not be considered for the giveaway.  Although it is my intent for you to use this gift card to purchase your turkey, there is no guarantee that the gift card will arrive prior to Thanksgiving despite our best efforts... therefore you can use it to buy whatever you desire at The Meat House during this holiday season.

Disclosure:

I received a gift card in order to facilitate my review.  Giveaway provided by The Meat House.  Opinions, thoughts and the goofy turkey kissing husband are mine, all mine.

#LatteLove at home care package giveaway via @MilkMustache

While writing this, my husband is on a mission to buy me a pumpkin spice latte.  Yes, I know.  My latte addiction is well documented here at Mommycosm, and is even referenced in my tagline, fortheloveofGod.

Something you may not know?

These days, I typically only buy a latte on my way home from the gym in the morning.  Consider it my treat for getting there... and some days the sweet promise of a post-workout latte is the only thing getting me up and out to the gym.

So, today my husband made a rare appearance on a weekday and, get this.  He let me sleep in.  No gym for me, but he offered to run out to get me a latte anyway.

Yeah, I think I'll keep him.  Either he realizes that I'll be more productive with my work after a little latte boost, or else he's afraid of being home all day with a caffeine free version of me.  Not sure.  But he's a smart, smart man nonetheless.

As he drove away on his 15 minute each way trip, I got to thinking.  One of these days I'm going to figure out how to make a latte at home.  I mean, I just promoted a #LatteLove Twitter party last week and was given a link to many yummy looking recipes over at The Breakfast Project, including a pumpkin spice one. They look easy enough, don't they?

One of these days is not today.

*sigh*

The folks over at The Breakfast Project teamed up with The Motherhood and are asking bloggers to share their reading list of favorite blogs enjoyed while sipping a morning latte.

Now, disclaimer.  I'm not the biggest fan of lists because unfortunately, inevitably and unintentionally, somebody gets left out.  There are over 300 blogs in my feed reader, so I do keep my finger on the pulse of a ton of really great blogs.  These days, I only visit my reader a couple times a month.  I have a few regular haunts I check out (almost) daily, but I also can be enticed by shiny objects via Facebook and Twitter.

A word of advice for any new(ish) bloggers.  Link your posts on Facebook and Twitter and don't be afraid to follow and/or friend request people you enjoy reading.  Just like 40 is the new 30, Facebook & Twitter are the new Google Reader.  Just saying.

Without further adieu... here's a short list of some of my favorite people to read:

Melanie in the Middle

Good Enough Mother

BusyDad Blog

Whiskey in my Sippy Cup

Girl with Blog

Extraordinary Mommy

Jenny on the Spot

Joey Fortman (Real Mom Media)

LouCeel

They will make you laugh.  They will make you cry.  At times, they will probably make you snarf your latte all over your computer screen.  You've been warned.

Would love for you to share your favorite reads - including your own blog.  And to encourage you to do so...

Giveaway:

One lucky Mommycosm reader will win a #LatteLove care package containing a Latte Love mug and coupon for a free gallon of milk, sent by TheMotherhood.

Mandatory Entry: Simply leave a comment on this post with your first name and share at least one blog you enjoy reading while sipping your morning latte.

One comment per person, please.  You must supply an email address in order for me to contact the winner.  (Note: I do NOT recommend putting email within the content of the comment itself.  Unless you enjoy Spam with your latte, that is.)

Mother's Day Meat House $50 shopping spree

Confession: When we were dating, I didn't let my husband know I could cook.  I was living in Boston at the time and my lifestyle involved eating out with friends a lot.  He would often cook for me when we saw eachother on the weekends... and since he was really good at it, I let him.  He assumed that because I didn't cook often, that I couldn't.  I allowed him to believe that.  It was a good gig.

ehem

Until...

My (now late) uncle out in Missouri, who owned a catering business, outed me.  You see, a love for cooking runs through my blood.  My uncle.  My dad.  My Grammy.  Each with their own specialties, but each gifted.  I appreciate good food.  It helps to know how to actually make it for yourself.

That being said, just because I CAN cook, doesn't mean that I always feel like it.  Which is why I have let my husband do almost all of the grilling in our 15 years together.  Whenever we grill, we prefer to buy our meat at our local neighborhood butcher, The Meat House.

I'm picky about the quality of the meat we consume.  It's not just that I have high end taste (I do), but I'm also concerned that the food we consume is getting overly processed.

Hello, pink slime.  [shudder]

The Meat House sells quality meats and became our go-to place years ago.  I absolutely LOVE their marinated steak tips.  They are hands down the most tender and delicious in the area, specifically the Maple Bourbon and Burgundy wine.

OK, now I am hungry.

If you are, too, and would like a few recipes to inspire you, check out The Meat House Blog, which includes recipes and tips from chefs.  If you're still looking for a great Mother's Day gift, skip the last-minute flowers and consider cooking Mom a yummy dinner instead.  To help you out with that, a giveaway.

Giveaway:

One lucky Mommycosm reader will win $50 gift card from The Meat House.

Mandatory Entry: Simply leave a comment on this post with your first name and state initials.  Tell me: who grills the meat in your house?

One comment per person, please.  You must supply an email address in order for me to contact the winner.  (Note: I do NOT recommend putting email within the content of the comment itself. SPAM is not a quality meat.)

@eBay's new site puts Green on steroids, plus enter to win $1,000 gc #spon

Last week, members of eBay's Parent Panel were granted a sneak peak into the new eBay Green site.  Let me tell you, it's way cool.

Whether you want to buy green, sell green or participate in an active green community, this site has it all.  I mean, if you think about it, eBay is inherently green to begin with.  They've pretty much mastered Reuse, don't you think?

OK back to the site.  There's so much coolness, I cannot cover it all in one blog post.  It's like they took green and put it on steroids.  I'm just going to share with you my top 3 favorite features and you're going to have to go explore yourself to find the rest.
