Decorating the Christmas Tree

We decided not to put up our tree this year.

No, we're not protesting Christmas and how commercial everything has become.  I'm ALL about presents and spending money around Christmastime.  Although, I do wish that stores would wait until after Thanksgiving to start with all the damn Christmas marketing and music...especially since they started in on it all just after Halloween this year.  We have a better reason for not putting up the tree.

We are leaving for our 3 week Aruba vacation in 11 days and will be there for Christmas.  I know, you hate me.  I understand.

Before you get stuck on the glamorous images of Margaritas by the poolside on Christmas day, remember that I have a 5 and a 2 year old.  We have traditions that we will not be able to pull off this year.  Unless I cut down a divi divi tree and lug it into our house, I'm thinking that the closest we'll get to a Christmas tree is to put lights on one of our outdoor palm trees.  How do I explain the lack of a fireplace?  The reindeer always leave a trail of little chocolate kisses from the kids' bedrooms leading them to their stockings in front of the fire place.  Where will the stockings go...and will the chocolate melt before the kids wake up?

I'm starting to have anxiety over ruining the mystery of Christmas for our extremely observant 5 year old.  If Santa doesn't make it to our house in Aruba instead of up here in NH, I'm sure there will be years of therapy to endure.  If Santa's helper exposes the packed gifts that need to remain unwrapped until we arrive due to airline security, well, we're pretty much screwed.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm really excited to go to Aruba.  I do really, really hate the snow and cold...BUT, I'm starting to feel a longing for our tree and other decorations.  Our ornaments are mostly sentimental.  Our angel for the top of the tree was made with material from my Grammy's shirt that she wore at my wedding.  She passed away a few years ago.  Our house is the only one on our street not lit up at night.  Princess even pointed that out last night.  It's just too much to decorate when we're not even going to be here.

I found this tree thing online while doing research for work today.  It doesn't quite count as decorating my tree with all of the sentimental ornaments and such.  But, it's cute, so I thought I'd share.  Enjoy.

I miss my tree, our outside lights and displaying our incoming Christmas cards.  I'm sad that I'm not decorating my tree with Princess, while explaining the importance of each ornament.

What are some of your favorite traditions that you'd miss if you went somewhere else for the holidays?

Please. Put me out of my misery.

We had THE Daddy’s holiday party for work last night. They call it a Gala. It’s black tie with dinner and drinks over night at a really nice Inn. I cut my hair really short…and got all dressed up. No snot or poop on my clothes. Dug out the non-mommy panties. Even wore panty hose and makeup.

It was fun. A smidge too much fun. Prime Rib, open bar, awesome 80’s cover band.

Yep, that was me doing shots with the owners. Yep, there I was dancing to Bon Jovi at midnight.

My eyeballs hurt. I think my blood is ½ Jack and Coke…or perhaps ¼ Jack & Coke and ¼ wine. Can’t really remember.

Had lunch and recess duty with Princess at her school. K-2 in cafeteria with spaghetti. VERY cold outside. The snow and sky are both white…way too white.

Had a kid ask are you the cool mom?

Not feeling like it right now. Felt like saying, nope, I’m the hungover on a weekday mom.

Got thru it in an outer body experience, feels like I’m living through a bad dream, am I really awake kind of way.

Got home hoping to take nap for an hour before picking up the kids from school.

Dog wiped ass all over living room carpet. Oh, the smell…too much.

THE Daddy tried to make coffee. Broke my favorite coffee mug in kitchen. Late for meeting. Leaves me to vacuum up mess. Vaccuum = way too loud.

That last shot seemed like a good idea. Wasn’t really thinking about how I would feel today.

Any ideas on how to quietly entertain the kids for 4 long hours until THE Daddy comes home? He’s not in nearly as bad of shape as I am and will be able to take over. I’m thinking of setting up a fort on the newly cleaned carpet and turning on a movie marathon.  I would call our babysitter, but I'm way to embarrassed to say Hi, I'm really hung over and can't deal...wanna watch the kids for a few hours?  Would that make me a bad mom?

It’s (NOT) the most wonderful time of the year

I hate snow. I hate being cold. I hate winter. We always ask the same question this time of the year:

Why the hell do we live in New Hampshire?!?!?

We still haven't come up with a great answer.  I mean, sure, we both grew up here, but what is keeping us here? Most of our family is in the area. I suppose having support close by is a huge benefit...especially since THE Daddy has been traveling a lot for work.  BUT, it's no way to live to be miserable for 2 ½ months out of the year.

It’s 10am Monday and we already have at least 6 inches of snow. It’s 27 degrees outside. It’s supposed to snow the rest of the day. Just about every school is closed, which means that the kids are home. I feel awful for saying this after what happened Friday, but I’m so ready for the kids to go back to school. They are bouncing off the walls and driving us both nuts while we’re trying to get some work done.  We did spend a ton of quality time together this weekend...lots of extra snuggling.

I spoke to my dad this morning. He feels the same way about winter. He relocated to Charleston, SC a little over 10 years ago. We SO would love to live down there. He said that it’s 70 degrees today. He tried complaining because it was raining, but I wasn’t having it.

Anyone want to hire an extremely hard working construction director in the Charleston area? Or anywhere else somewhat warm, for that matter? I'm looking for a place where the entire area shuts down when there is a rare snowflake falling. Finding THE Daddy a job that will pay what he makes now is our biggest obstacle.

If you could pick anywhere to live year round, where would you live?
